Splash ID is crashing

My SplashID Desktop 3.32 keeps crashing--I get an error message and I have
to close it. It crashes rather randomly, but mainly when I switch from one
Type to another. Scrolling through most catagories causes it also.

I have re-downloaded the software and re-installed it, but I still get the
same crash.

Help!

I wrote this note here and also to SplashData support on the 14th with no
reply. Can someone help me get my Splash ID working again? I use it daily
(or at least I used to until it started crashing).

Ann,

I assume that the data on you device is okay, but the data on your desktop
is corrupted. In you My Documents folder, look for the SplashData folder.
There should be a subfolder for SplasID. Is there a file named
SplashIDDatabase.sdb? This is your SplashID data file for the SplashID
Desktop. Rename the file to SplashIDDatabasesdb.bad. Start the SplashID
Desktop. Since the Desktop won't find the data file, it will create one and
the Desktop will be empty. This is fine. Then do a hotsync with handheld
overwrites desktop or synchronize. After the hotsync, your Desktop should
have the same records as on your device.

Aaron,
Thanks for the info. Yes, the info on my device is fine. I did exactly what
you suggested, but when I opened it again (after syncing "handheld
overwrites desktop") I get the same error and crash--this time just as it's
opening.

Now what?

Ann,

On second step after the SplashIDDatabase.sdb file is renamed to
SplashIDDatabasesdb.bad, does the SplashID desktop open or crash? If it
opens with no problem, it leads me to believe that there is a bad record
that causes a problem for the desktop, but not on your device. I would need
more information to figure out how to isolate the bad record.

How many record do you have?

I had a similar error some time ago and exported and reimported all
records. <mid:***@zemisch.net>

The problem seemed to be one of my category icons, now I use only iambic
icons and it works again without problems. If you can open all records
on the handheld, try to change all icons to an easy one. Maybe it
helps.

That was it! It was an icon problem. I just went and deleted all but
SplashDataIcons and now it's working. I have an Iambic icon file that is
corrupted it seems, so I need to attend to that, but at least I know that I
can get to my stuff by deleting the icon database.

Thanks for the help.

To me it seems, that in some cases the icon handling in the desktop
versions of Palm programs is not the best. It's not only SplashData,
some other programs have similar problems.

But glad to help. And good to know, what to try next time first, before

Is there a way for Splash ID not to automatically use my other icon sets,
and just use the one that came with it? It seems to automatically find and
use my Iambic icons. I don't need the icons at all really. Fun, but not
necessary especially if it screws up usage of the program.

Just wondering.

I did a little checking into this, but haven't come up with any way yet.
This is what is in the SplashID user guide which doesn't answer your
question. It may have to be a feature request unless there is an
undocumented way.

Aaron
Custom Icons

SplashID includes a built-in set of icons to choose from. In addition,
SplashID supports custom icons which are available from third-party vendors,
as well as icons created with icon editing applications like Icon Manager.

* SplashID will always display its built-in icons in the icon picker.
* If there are custom icon databases installed on your handheld, the
icons in the default icon database will be appended to the SplashID built-in
icons and displayed in the icon picker.
* If you wish to create a custom set of icons for use only in
SplashID, you may create a custom icon database (using Icon Manager) and
name it SplashDataIcons. If an icon database called SplashDataIcons exists
on your handheld, SplashID will append those icons to its list of built-in
icons.

Hello Ann,
Post by AnnHC
It was an icon problem. I just went and deleted all but
SplashDataIcons and now it's working. I have an Iambic icon file that
is corrupted it seems, so I need to attend to that, but at least I
know that I can get to my stuff by deleting the icon database.
To me it seems, that in some cases the icon handling in the desktop
versions of Palm programs is not the best. It's not only SplashData,
some other programs have similar problems.
But glad to help. And good to know, what to try next time first, before
starting the reimport from a .csv.
Regards
Dirk

Icon manager allows you to create a new default Icon set for SplashID, named
"SplashDataIcons."

You can do this, or select a different set as the default (bold) set, and
that will be appended to the default icons in SplashID on the handheld.

Then they will transfer to the desktop at HotSync.

The important issue, however, is to delete the corrupt set you have.

I use IconMgr also. SplashID adds it's icon database and also my own icon
database, constructed with IconMgr, to it's files to use. My main icon base
got corrupted and caused a problem in SplashID so I was wondering if there
is a way to just have SplashID use it's own icon database, and not access
mine.

I use IconMgr(freeware) which separates sets by application.

Is there a way for Splash ID not to automatically use my other icon
sets,
Post by AnnHC
and just use the one that came with it? It seems to automatically
find and

use my Iambic icons. I don't need the icons at all really. Fun,
but not

necessary especially if it screws up usage of the program.
Just wondering.

Hi Ann,

Seems like Aaron is helping you out with the same advice I have offered in
the past (thanks, Aaron!). I will repeat it here in case you need it.

Is your data OK on the handheld?

If so, Please try this. Find this file:

My Documents\SplashData\SplashID\<username>\SplashID Database.sdb

Change it's name to SplashIDdatabase.bad

Then launch SplashID on the desktop and you should find it empty.

Then set your SplashID conduit to handheld overwrites desktop for one sync.

To do this:
1. Click the HotSync icon in the system tray on the lower right hand side of
your windows desktop, and select Custom.
2. A list of conduits will appear.
3. Double-click the SplashID conduit and choose handheld overwrites desktop,
then click OK.
4. Perform a hotsync. This will move all the data (and password) from the
handheld to the desktop.

If you are still having problems, please contact me directly through this
form on our website:

I wrote this note here and also to SplashData support on the 14th with no
reply. Can someone help me get my Splash ID working again? I use it daily
(or at least I used to until it started crashing).

My SplashID Desktop 3.32 keeps crashing--I get an error message and I have
to close it. It crashes rather randomly, but mainly when I switch from one
Type to another. Scrolling through most catagories causes it also.
I have re-downloaded the software and re-installed it, but I still get the
same crash.
Help!
Ann
